Overview
Velma J. Morris of Cincinnati is a self-taught
artist, attended evening adult classes at the Art Academy
of Cincinnati and classes at the Baker-Hunt Foundation
in Covington, Kentucky. She is a much sought after judge,
speaker and educator. Ms. Morris is passing on that knowledge
by teaching adult and children classes through the Baker-Hunt
Foundation and Kenton County Library Program for at risk
children. These programs foster better understanding for
the arts for everyone. Ms. Morris is a winner of many awards.
Her work can be found in private and corporate collections
all across the country.
Being an artist of color and a woman, I'm always surprised
to hear people say, 'Did you do that?' It seems
that most people still want to put you in a box. They
expect to see all black images or floral paintings. My
artwork is the total of my life experiences. My equine
series is of the entire look of the race as I see it.
The excitement, the colors, the movement and the thrill
of seeing a man and the beast making music together.
My figures are not of the plight of man, but the beauty
of man. There is so much going on that isn't good per
the media, I want my work to bring joy when you view
it. I enjoy celebrating life.
