Overview
The illusion of magic is the desired outcome for
my work. Magic is what happens when process and spirit
merge in a synergistic relationship to produce art. In
the words of Tennessee Williams, in my art, “I don’t
want realistic! I want magic!”
Andy Warhol, Chuck Close, and the work of fiber artists
inspire my work. Like Warhol, I utilize the printmaking
process to repeat and fuse imagery. The process of abstraction
leaves the essence of the subject, forming the basis of
the linoleum blocks. I then manipulate contrast of scale
and include random visual texture. Texture is also achieved
by lively acrylic under painting. Chuck Closes’s
work inspires the use of grids, arbitrary color and repetition
of shape. Curious patterns appear when the blocks are used
as repeats. My years spent as a fiber artist emerge in
the resulting quilt-like motifs. Visual patterns of color,
line and texture take on a life of their own on the canvas.
Art exists all around us, undiscovered in a world rushing
to go somewhere else. I strive to find imagery that, when
abstracted and assembled in a repeat pattern becomes provocative
and creates its own magic.
